Learning about your brakes is not such a bad idea.

Did you know the minimum brake pad lining your brakes are allowed to have is only 2mm? However new prake pads have a lining thickness of about 8mm only to start off with. This means that since you had your brake pads replaced last they should not have worn more than 6mm! Not a lot if you know your metric measurements. a lot of cars these days have brake pad wear indicators fitted to either one pad or both brake pads per disc rotor.

The wear indicator is just a little metal tag that is attached to the brake pad with an exactly 2mm gap from the disc rotor. When the brake pad wears down far enough for the wear indicator to touch the brake disc while the car is driving, it will make a squeeking noise well audible in the drivers cab which in turn lets the driver know that it is time to book in the car for a brake pad replacement.

However in some vehicles these tabs are not fitted. Therefore any noise caused by these vehicles means something a lot more serious. probably that the pads or at least one of the brake pads has worn that far, that it is metal to metal on the disc rotor. now what happens is that the hard backing plate ot the pad is cutting into your disc rotor rapidly eliminating the chances of machining the discs for the brake pad replacement by metal to metal contact. So dont take brake noise for granted. If your previous car had brake pad wear indicators , your recent car might not.

A lot of common symptoms of excessively worn brakes are: squeeky or squeeling brakes, grinding discs or shuddering brakes. a low or spongy pedal is caused by the hydraulic system of your brakes. mostly due to air in the system. In this case the brakes will need to be fully inspected and disassembled. The leak needs to be isolated and repaired. In  lot of cases it could be that a wheel cylinder of the rear brakes is leaking past the pistons. The wheel cylinders can be resleeved but the cost of a new set ( remember brake repairs are done in pairs) is mostly not far of the resleeve, if not even less. Although resleeving the wheel cylinder or even the brake caliper could ensure you will never need to do it again, as these sleeves are made from Stainless steel.

Spongy brakes or a low pedal can also be caused by a bypassing master cylinder. The master cylinder is the haydraulic pump attached to the brake pedal. sometimes there is a brake booster or vaccum advance unit fitted to the master cylinder to give you power brakes. again a resleeve and overhaul of the unit is possible, but if your car is of a common make and model there should be plenty of new master cylinders available for near the same cost. if there is an extra cost it would be covered by the benifit of having the part available instantly rather than having to wait for the brake specialist to overhaul your old master cylinder.

A little bit about starter motors.

Starter motors are what turns or cranks your engine when you turn the key. They are designed to crank a heavy load ( like your cold engine for example) for a short period of time ( until your engine starts) After a certain amount of times they just get weak, and eventually the starter motor becomes neither a starter nor a motor. this is when you need a new starter motor.

However too many times people in their panic for getting to work on time jump the gun and blame the starter motor or the alternator. This could be an expensive exercise if you should act on that gut feeling. An expert mechanic can diagnose the starter motor and in fact the entire starting system by a process of elimination, in the hope, that it might just be some thing easier and cheaper than a starter motor. like a loose wire for example or a blown fuse. If however it does turn out to be the starter motor, this is no problem either, as there is no way around it. Your car wont start without a starter motor. The starter motor itself can be repaired. but like many things these days quality aftermarket, and sometimes even the original parts can cost not much more than a reconditioned starter motor. and it will be available instantly.

Have you ever wondered about that clicking noise when turning? This is probably due to worn CV joints.

CV joints usually last a long time, but the CV joint boots deteriorate, causing the lube to leak out of the CV joint.

CV joints can be replaced seperately, but in most cases it proves cheaper to replace the whole CV joint shaftas the inner cV joint turns the same amount of times as the outer CV joint. Except at different angles.

have you ever got up to go to work and your car wont start?

Did you think it was the starter motor or the alternator?

It could just be a flat battery or even a bad electrical connection.have an expert diagnose the problem for you before you buy an expensive starter motor or alternator. We will only replace a starter motor once we have carried out all other electrical diagnostics and have proven that the starter motor or alternator need to be replaced.

Brake and steering repairs are no jobs for cutting corners!

When a qualified mechanic, whether he is a mobile mechanic or situated in a workshop is working on brakes it is his duty to only repair the brakes and the steering to the highest standard of safety and quality. Brake pads have a certain life expectancy, and this depends on the driving style and other conditions the brake pads are subjected to. The way brake pads wear can be quite different because of that, but when it comes to repairing brakes there is only one way, and that is the right way.

New brake pads are to be fitted. We only use quality brake pads in order to cancel out any problems due to bad manufacture. And at the very least your disc rotors will be skimmed. It would be false economy to put new brake pads onto worn and scored disc rotors. Any mechanic who offers to only replace the brake pads without machining the disc rotors is taking a risk that you might end up paying for. But most likely there will soon be a brake squeel within a week or so. Brake discs or disc rotors have a certain wear limit. Once the disc rotor is worn beyond or too close to that minimum size the machinist will reject them as it then becomes illegal to machine the discs. In that case you will need a new set.

With brakes in general as a good practice repairs are done in pairs. which means that if you replace the brake pads on one side of any axle, you need to replace the brake pads on the other side aswell. And the same goes for the disc rotors. replace or machine one disc rotor replace or machine the other disc rotor also.

The old flat battery.

There is nothing worse than running late, trying to make up time by running to the car, and then finding out that it wont start. Could it be the immobiliser? could it be the alternator? could it even be a flat battery? Without propper diagnostics anything is possible. the best way to diagnose a no start is by checking the easy and the least expensive scenarios first. nobody wants to replace an expensive alternator just to find out that the car still wont start. If you have a flat battery. the  first thing to do is check the water inside the battery. take note not to get any on you.

it might be water when you put it in the battery but it soon turns to battery acid. check the battery terminals. are they corroded? are the battery terminals loose? They will need to be cleaned and refitted propperly. Care needs to be taken, that the polarity of the battery terminals do not get mixed up. This could cause major damage to the electronics or even explode the battery. causing serious injury. Batteries are heavy, and can cause back injuries depending on location and lifting technique.

There is no harm in replacing a battery if you know what you`re doing. but if you dont know, leave it up to the experts. Call a mobile mechanic to replace your battery for you.
